Twitrratr Keyword Opinion Search for Twitter

Search Engine Optimization 1 Comment »

I like twitter and use it almost everyday to connect with contacts, spread humor and share information.

I found a new service that shows Twitter rankings for different keywords and phrases. I typed in “Barack Obama” and it broke their script :) Most search terms get considerably less traffic, such as the one for my account “cvos”

Im happy to report that I am 16% positive 75% neutral and 8% negative. The service is a bit inaccurate, apparently using a single set of keywords to determine the opinion of a tweet. If no keywords in a tweet are in Twitrratr’s database the post will automatically be categorized as neutral. Some keywords are misrepresented, for example Ill is interpreted as ill, or illin when it is just a contraction of I will.

Twitter is all about having fun while connecting with people and twitrratr makes good use of Twitters API to have fun with social data mining.

My twitrratr (this is very difficult to spell) keyword CVOS. Found at TC.

Google Keyword Searches During Presidential Debate

During the US presidential debate in New York on October 10 2008 several key topics were discussed including

  • Roe v Wade
  • Litmus Test
  • ACORN
  • Joe the Plumber
  • Charter and Vouchers

Below is a graph of real time searches on Google following remarks made by Barack Obama and John McCain during their presidential debate. I wonder what a real time Twitter graph would look like?

Google will definitely keep political candidates honest as accurate information is just an internet search away. Im waiting for debates to follow MTV and have a live broadcast chat option to discuss the debate in real time.

How To Reverse ATT Wireless International Roaming Charges

Online Business Comments Off

Santorini Greece I have more love for ATT Wireless. After returning from my honeymoon in the Aegean Sea and Santorini I had wireless data usage charges from my iPhone of nearly $200. This is after I purchased an international data plan that was supposed to protect me from high charges.

The ATT international data plan cost $24.99 for 20 MB and $59.99/month for 50 MB data transfer. These plans are pro rated, so if you cancel after only using part of the plan they refund the balance. Without the plan data is $19 per Megabyte.

I purchased the 20 Meg plan and found huge data roaming charges in some areas, as well as a charge for each call my phone received while in those countries. I haver answered the phone calls but ATT billed $1.29 for 1 minute usage for each call!

I called ATT customer service, and patiently explained my frustration and they waived all the extra charges! I spent more time on hold than talking with the kind customer service rep. Yay ATT, I’m feeling really good about switching from Verizon Wireless.

Other people have had similar problems with international data roaming, and ATT seems to have given them full credits.

Finding Happiness During An Economic Recession

Web Development Comments Off

With the stock market down about 30% this year and many investments down 40% or more, I would like to look at positive ways to feel better and reduce life stress.

Stress from fiscal uncertainty does not need to be debilitating, and one of the best ways to overcome it is by engaging in worthy activities and helping your community.

New Happiness Research from Psychologist Martin Seligman shows us how to remain positive during an Economic Crash. Dr. Seligman is an expert on happiness and has previously studied depression and learned helplessness.

His latest research is all scientifically verified and published in the Princeton Alumni Weekly

There are three levels to happiness: pleasure, the delight you get from chocolate, fast cards, and sex; engagement, the feeling of “flow” you get when you’re doing something you’re good at; and meaning, the fulfillment you get from being engaged in an effort greater than yourself. Pleasure is ephemeral and contributes very little to real happiness… but meaningful engagement brings lasting contentment.

For classmates who are headed towards retirement, Seligman offers the following tip: “Material objects have almost no role in positive emotion. As you organize your retirement, spend it on meaningful engagement. Don’t squander your savings on boats and houses.”

It’s pretty simple, actually. Figure out what you’re good at. And then apply your strengths to a greater purpose (such as using your search engine optimization skills to help a charity or worthy cause). And don’t forget to cultivate optimism along the way.

I found this information via Tim Ferris and his post on raising money for needy schools.

How To Get Out of the Verizon Wireless Early Termination Fee

Online Business 1 Comment »

I recently bought an iPhone and decided to cancel my Verizon wireless service. When I called verizon to terminate they informed me they would charge me for the remainder of my month under contract (30 days) as well as a $90 pro rated early termination fee. I have been a customer with Verizon for over 8 years and was quite perturbed at the cancellation fees they wanted to charge me.

Federal regulations require cellphone carriers to allow you cancel your wireless service if there is a rate change within 60 days. Use this to your advantage and tell the customer service reps you wish to cancel your cell phone contract.

All you need to do is call Verizon Wireless and tell them you wish to terminate your plan because they raised sms rates. I did this by email. It took 3 emails, each one politely explaining the fee increase and copying their terms of service in each email.

Verizon Wireless Terms of Service

Our Rights To Make Changes Your service is subject to our business policies, practices, and procedures, which we can change without notice. UNLESS OTHERWISE PROHIBITED BY LAW, WE CAN ALSO CHANGE PRICES AND ANY OTHER CONDITIONS IN THIS AGREEMENT AT ANY TIME BY SENDING YOU WRITTEN NOTICE PRIOR TO THE BILLING PERIOD IN WHICH THE CHANGES WOULD GO INTO EFFECT. IF YOU CHOOSE TO USE YOUR SERVICE AFTER THAT POINT, YOU’RE ACCEPTING THE CHANGES. IF THE CHANGES HAVE A MATERIAL ADVERSE EFFECT ON YOU, HOWEVER, YOU CAN END THE AFFECTED SERVICE, WITHOUT ANY EARLY TERMINATION FEE, JUST BY CALLING US WITHIN 60 DAYS AFTER WE SEND NOTICE OF THE CHANGE.

In the 3rd email I requested my case be escalated to a senior customer support representative, and that evening a Verizon rep called me to tell me they were releasing me from my contract effective immediately.

THIS WORKS even if you do not have a text message plan.

I am now with ATT Wireless and they are better than I expected. They offered me a free ringtone for signing up for their web based account management, and when they informed me that the offer was not good on an iPhone, they credited my bill $1.98.

So far AT&T customer service has been good, the website works well (much better than Verizon’s) and the cellphone coverage is better.

Verizon has a serious case of iPhone envy and they are not surprisingly loosing scads of customers to AT&T Wireless. I’m happy with my iPhone and happy with the network provider.

I thought the FCC was a meaningless organization run by telco lobbyists, but this is one telecommunications law that actually serves the people, not corporations.

Verizon wireless increased sms text message fees last may, and are increasing sms fees from 3rd party providers. The new fee increase is $.03 and will be applied to MT (mobile terminated) messages processed on its network beginning Nov. 1. MT messages are sent by mobile web service providers including Google, ESPN, ChaCha, Cellfire, CNN and some financial institutions. MT messages include interactive voting notifications, text alerts, and SMS search results.

The fee is in addition to current MT-messaging fees, which typically cost the sender anywhere from a fraction of a penny to a few cents.

Google Spreads Linking Naivity

Link Building Comments Off

Links are one of the largest untracked forms of online currency, and as soon as the IRS discovers this they will try to find a way to tax them. Every link is an indication of an exchange of real value, even if the parties are linking naively.

Here is one example where an innocent link exchange with no money changing hands is increasing the value of a site:

Site A finds a cool image they want to use on site B. Site A copies the image and gives credit to site B via a link. In this example, a link has replaced payment for usage of the image. This is a basic barter deal and no search engine can complain about the link exchange.

Here Maile Ohye, Developer Programs Tech Lead at Google talks about outbound links, but forgets to mention it is a multi million dollar business.

Relevant outbound links can help your visitors

  • Provide your readers in-depth information about similar topics
  • Offer readers your unique commentary on existing resources

Thoughtful outbound links can help your credibility.

  • Show that you’ve done your research and have expertise in the subject manner
  • Make visitors want to come back for more analysis on future topics
  • Build relationships with other domain experts (e.g. sending visitors can get you on the radar of other successful bloggers and begin a business relationship)

Read more about how Google tries to downplay the global linking cartel.

In another twist of irony, this article is published as a subdomain on blogspot.com which is the number 1 source of link spam and autogenerated content online.
