According to Google, the best way to build a 100% natural backlink profile is to create valuable content that other people will link to naturally. After all, Google doesn’t care whether your business succeeds, they just want their customers to be happy with their search results. But for those among us without massive creative departments and investor bankrolls, link building is still the best bet. Fortunately, there are some entirely natural (and entirely ethical) ways of speeding up the natural backlink process, without attempting to wrest your black hat from the powerful jaws of Google’s panda.

Write Linkworthy Content

Of course, no backlink profile will look natural if it’s not pointing at some truly valuable content. Even if you don’t write it to draw in thousands of natural links (which it probably won’t), your job will be much easier if you take the time to load your website with great content. Fortunately, great content isn’t that hard to create. Consider these factors when coming up with content ideas, and when writing the content itself:

1. Look to powerful content sites like Mashable and Cracked.com for titles that interest readers. Use these for inspiration for your own titles.
2. If you’re not a good writer, remember that resource pages (pages filled with links to other sources of information) are very easy to write, valuable, and very popular with website visitors.
3. Write for your readers, not the search engines. Stuffing content with keywords doesn’t work anymore.
4. If all else fails, just try to be original, funny, or controversial.

Shortly after the now famous Google Panda algorithm update, Google’s Amit Singhal published a blog post explaining the parameters that Google uses to judge high quality websites. These tips largely focus on creating content that is free of errors and is written from an expert point of view.

Remember that this approach to your content is not just limited to clever blog posts, but to your entire website. Try to take an otherwise normal lead generation page and make it something unique and special. For example, you might be tempted to simply list your services for a clear wireless internet website in a simple text box. You could, however, take this content to the next level and present it in a unique way – like a list of the “Top 10 Ways Our Competition Will Steal Your Hard-Earned Money.”

Remember to Build Deep Links

There are essentially two types of powerful domains – brandable and exact match. If you have a brandable domain name, it makes perfect sense that the majority of the links coming in will be to your homepage, and they will probably have the anchor text [Your Domain Name]. If you have an exact match domain, you can also expect many links to come in with your exact match keyword phrase (in the same way that purpleturtles.com would probably get a lot of links with “purple turtles” as the anchor text).

However, it will always still look strange if all of the links you get are pointed at the homepage of your site. While it can be more challenging, be sure to build some deep links, or links that point at subpages of your website. There are a few subpages that tend to naturally acquire more links than others, and large amounts of links will look natural pointing at them:

• Resource Pages (like a list of valuable websites in your niche)
• Link Baits (like infographics, videos, and viral blog posts)
• About Us (yup, these pages get a ton of links, especially if you’re an authority figure or trying to be one)

Add Some Variety to Your Anchor Text

There’s often a misconception about how links are counted by search engines. Every link has two values that it can pass to your site – authority and keyword text. When a link passes authority, it gets counted by Google towards things like your Page Rank. When a link passes anchor text, it helps you rank higher in SERPs for that keyword term. Although it’s best to get links that pass both authority and anchor text at the same time, natural backlink profiles demand much more variety.

Take the time to really think about how people link to websites. If 100 people naturally linked to a page of your website called “Top 10 Ways to Do SEO Right,” would you expect them all to use the anchor text “SEO?” Of course not. Instead, the anchor text would be all over the place. You would even see some aggravating anchor text like:

• Click here!
• This website claimed that…
• According to an SEO website…
• That’s not what this website had to say, however.

So, remembering that links pass both authority and anchor text, you can feel confident in adding a few strange anchor text links to your backlink profile, for the sake of looking natural. You’ll still get the benefit of link juice, but without being passed anchor text.

If this is too much to bear, you can still add variety to your anchor text to make it look more natural, while still focusing on keywords. Start with a simple long tail keyword that you would like to target, such as “payday loans for senior citizens in Oregon.” Build one or two links using that anchor text. Next, divide up all the parts of that long tail phrase so you have several smaller keyword phrases:

• payday loans
• payday loans for senior citizens
• senior citizens in Oregon

Finally, think of all the variations that include some form of the smaller keyword phrases. For example, we might use the following simple modifier keyword phrases for “payday loans:”

• fast payday loans
• quick payday loans
• cheap payday loans
• pay day loans
• loans for payday

Use your new list of anchor text variations when continuing to build links. If you do it right, Google’s robots will see that you have all sorts of different links coming in with the same general idea (payday loans for senior citizens in Oregon), but with a much more natural and difficult to detect pattern. Just make sure that your original long tail keyword phrase makes sense when describing the page to which it links.

Establish a Natural Link Schedule

It’s very tempting to launch enormous link building campaigns just to “get it out of the way” or start cashing in on your efforts quickly. Nothing, however, looks less natural than a brand new website attracting thousands of links (sometimes even before the content is indexed). Time your link building campaigns for a couple of days after you put up fresh content, and space them out as much as you can. You might build one or two links to each page to help it get indexed faster, but any more looks fishy. There isn’t an easy rule regarding how much link building is too much, but use your best judgment when linking to your site.

If you absolutely must build links quickly, the best way to make it look natural is to pay attention to sites like Google Trends and release newsworthy content that will attract links as the day goes on. You need to have significant traffic already to make it look completely natural. For example:

1. You notice that “Kate Gosselin” is trending on Google Trends.
2. After some research, you find that it’s because her kids want her to get married again.
3. You write five news articles on the topic (yes they should be unique…) and publish one on your site.
4. You then reach out to some blog owners to publish the other four articles with a link back to your site.

With this technique, it makes a lot of sense that people would link to your article on the same day (or shortly after) it was very popular online.

Remember that, as your site grows, you can get away with building links faster. This looks natural as your site begins ranking for more competitive search phrases and your Page Rank increases.

Add Variety to Your Link Profile

Finally, get your links from more than one source. Guest blogging is a great way to get high quality links, but it’s not the only way sites get natural backlinks. If your entire link profile is created from guest blogging, your links will look suspicious. Ignoring bad neighborhood links and obvious spam, SEOMoz’s Rand Fishkin outlines some of the most popular link sources in his video Dude, Your Links Kinda Suck. In the low quality section, he lists some great sources of quick links, such as:

1. Junk Directories (Paid Directory Listings)
2. Do-Follow Blogs (Mainly Blog Comments)
3. Forum Signatures (Forum Posts)
4. Social Media Profiles (As Long As You Don’t Spam)
5. Sites You Own (Please, please be careful with this one)
6. Reciprocal (Just grab a few)

Even if it makes you shudder, adding a few thousand paid directory links to your profile (after you have plenty of high quality links) can serve to help disguise your link building efforts from competitors, and Google understands the value of this as long as you don’t overdo it.

Building Links the Natural Way

Sometimes, you just have to forget all of the theories and rules, and just have a little fun with your SEO. There are very few things you can do to permanently destroy your site’s SEO, and they’re not the kinds of things you do by accident. Always try to think of creative ways to get links to your site, and think like the person linking to you.

Eventually, if you provide valuable content, you’ll see natural links flowing in pretty consistently. You can build as many links as you can, with exact match anchor text, and see how much money you can make before getting penalized (which is often a good strategy in highly competitive industries). Or, you can keep your backlink profile natural and plan for a long future that will eventually make you nearly untouchable in your niche.

Link building changes each year, this is a summary of how to prosper with your linking activities in the coming years.

5 years ago all we had to do is build exact anchor text links and we could hope for high rankings. 10 years ago we could get high rankings with forum signature links and comments, but today everything revolves around relevancy and natural link profiles.

We know that we need to diversify our links starting from anchor texts we use, position on the page up to types of websites we get links from, not to mention keeping your link velocity in check. So what did we learn in the past few years regarding link building? Are there things that didn’t change and what can we expect to remain the same so we can plan ahead for quality link building.

The types of link we will need to get in the future may change a bit, but they will still rely on several factors that will most likely remain the same. So what do we need to look for to determine a quality page for our link?

Link Metrics

• Relevance
• Authority
• Popularity
• Traffic
• Social presence

Nothing new there right, but this is the basic list of ingredients for quality backlinks. One thing I always look for are traffic pages. Most SEO’s simple look for page rank or MozRank or general authority of a website, but what good will that do for me right now? Yes it may impact my rankings along with some other links, but unless it is a high traffic page I won’t be able to see any traffic increase on my site for quite some time, and link building is not just about rankings, it is about driving targeted traffic to the right location. So let’s look at certain link building strategies that can influence your rankings and drive some quality traffic your way and we know that they will work in the future.

Competitor Research – Moving In on the Competition

Until you come up with a solid link building strategy you need to be mindful of your competitors and get all the good links they have. Well, at least as much as you can. Don’t go blindly after all of the competitor links, evaluate the most valuable ones, the high traffic ones that pass on some link juice as well and concentrate on acquiring those, even if it takes a bit longer. You don’t need your competitor’s bad or low quality links, you just need the cream of their link profile, which should be enough to get you started and at the same time find a working pattern to implement on your personal link building campaign.

There are many tools you can use to find competitor links, I suggest Open Site Explorer and Yahoo Site Explorer, but don’t forget the power of advanced search queries.

Guest Posting – A Two Way Street

By now you probably know that in-content links have a great value as they appear to be natural. This depends, but they have been gaining popularity in terms of quality and desire. Everyone wants guest posts, but remember that this is a two way street.

Getting new backlinks  by guest posting is great: you will get bigger exposure, social media promotion from your fellow bloggers and ultimately a highly relevant link, but you need to think of the effect of accepting guest posts for your website.

When you do a guest post you should link to it and accept guest posts from other bloggers in your market area. This gives you free content, free extra social media promotion for your website and most likely a few links as everyone wants their content ranking better and passing more link juice. By allowing guest posts you are doing your rankings a favor and helping the community.

Quality Content – Linkbaiting and Natural Links

Natural link building, create great content that attracts links naturally, sounds great, but it is not easy – or is it?

Creating valuable quality content is in fact not that hard, but since the net is full of  content this isn’t enough anymore. You need to create something that stands apart from the rest with thorough research and lots of brainstorming. Examine your market and find out what people are looking for, use old data and update it, present it in a new light, create informational content that exceeds the status quo.

Tutorials, how to’s, infographics, slides, videos, controversy, promotions, plugins, tools, these can all attract great links on their own, they just need to be presented in an attractive way. Some people manage to do that even without the best content, they just know how to package the product and serve it to their audience, which is the most important part. Get to know your audience, which is the only way to create something they will link to on their own free will.

If you can rely on informational market one of the easiest ways to get some recognition and establish yourself as authority, get some links as well, is to do extensive research regarding your market, present the new data and talk about it wherever you get the chance. New results, polls, survey, case studies will surely make you stand out from the crowd, so this is a worthy investment that you should pursue by all means.

And if everything else fails you just need a known person to act as your spokesman. That is not as hard as you think; just find a known person in your market on the net or real life celebrity to interview, and present this in a funny way. Get the host to talk about your products, services or simply offer an opinion on a relevant topic. Interviews from known people can be a great ice breaker for your traffic and can help you reach the tipping point for high traffic and social media promotion. They can catapult your website and make it desirable place to link to and promote.

Planning Your Link Building Campaign

This may be new to you or maybe not, most likely you already know about the link building methods mention here, but just knowing something is not enough. You need to know and practice in order to achieve something, and going out blindly will also get you nowhere, you need to plan ahead and create your link building campaign blueprint from the start. This is the only way to expect results and measure the success of your campaign.

Following the mentioned methods in this article you can create a time frame for your link building efforts and act accordingly. You can create a budget and you can have time to do research, preparation and then go out to get results, and you will get them if you just plan ahead. Link building and content creation is not that hard when you know what to look for. Get to know and understand your market and your audience, that is the only way to succeed, online or offline.

To Google, custom URL shorteners are basically viewed as general redirects and the PageRank comes through just like a regular 301 or permanent redirect, so there isn’t any downside for SEO. As Matt Cutts of Google says in a video posted on their Webmaster Help YouTube Channel, “If we try to crawl a page, and we see a 301 or permanent redirect, which pretty much all well-behaved URL shorteners like bit.ly or goo.gl will do, if we see that 301 then that will pass PageRank to the final destination.”

He adds that since the PageRank and anchor text will flow through, there shouldn’t be any harm to using custom URL shorteners in SEO.

There are some nuances, of course, such as Twitter webpages that have a nofollow link, that might require other ways for Google to find out about the link. As he puts it, “Now, just to let you know, if you look at, for example, Twitter’s web pages, many of those links have a nofollow link, so those links that are on the webpage, may not necessarily flow PageRank. But we might be able to find out about those links through some other way, maybe a data feed or something like that. But just URL shorteners, as far as how they relate to SEO, are not necessarily a problem at all.”

The bottom line is that URL shorteners are a powerful way to build links and support SEO. “The vast majority of well-behaved URL shorteners have good uptime, and also pass PageRank and anchor text because they use a 301 redirect,” concludes Matt Cutts.

Google has just evolved their own shortener, goo.gl, with several new features to improve its ease of use and performance.

• bit.ly and j.mp – the grandaddys of URL shorteners, now owned by Twitter. They have great tracking tools.
• goo.gl – Google’s new shortener, we have not tested it but it should work well
• is.gd
• tinyurl.com – This was the original URL shortener, although it is rarely used anymore. Sad story from a top 100 web 1.0 website.

We still believe that you should get quality links from unfiltered sources, and not rely solely on 3rd party services for your linkbuilding URL’s.

• Infographics – Excellent examples of infographics are found in high quality news sites and Ezines such as Newsweek, Time.com, and the NYtimes. Infographics are beautiful graphical designs that explain complex data. A picture is worth a thousand words, and a quality infographic can be worth 1000 links.
• Continuous Updates – Websites are dynamic, and people expect you to update your online presence. Blogs are the best way to do this, but any new content pages are good.
• Widgets – Simple items that people can place on their website or blog.  High profile examples include D&B, BBB, TrustLink, StatCounter, Vimeo, MicroPoll and many others. Create a service that solves a problem, provides value and is easy to implement.

Invite people to email you and answer their questions. Become a guru, an expert, a resource, a destination on the internet – you can be a Wikipedia in your niche.

Generate content by had writing about what you love. If you don’t enjoy the subject, outsource this task. No one will read words that have no passion behind them. If you can’t get the energy to write for your audience, how can you expect them to expend energy to consume your content?
