Interesting video montage on the shift of information and population in the world. It’s easy to get tunnel vision and not see the big picture of a huge world. We have shifted into an exponential period of growth.
Some stats:
- If you’re 1 in a million, in China there are 1,300 people just like you.
- While you read and digest this post 351 babies were born in India.
- The top 10 jobs in demand in 2010 didn’t exist in 2004.
- Nintendo invested 140 million dollars into R&D in 2002, twice the federal government spending on education innovation.
- Google serves up 2.7 billion searches each month – who answered these questions before Google existed?
- The number of text messages sent daily exceeds the population of the planet.
- More than 3000 books are published daily
- A week of the New York Times contains more new information than the average 18th century person read in a lifetime.
- About 1.5 exabytes (1.5 X 10^18) of new information will be generated this year, more than in the past 5000 years combined.
- The amount of technical information is doubling every 2 years.
- 1 out of 8 marriages now occur from people meeting online.
- people have more jobs in ten years than their parents had in a lifetime.
When the growth curve passes a certain point it is impossible to contain, much like a nuclear reaction.
